As the demand for future engineers increases across the UK, Engineers have a responsibility to educate, inspire and convince young people to become the next generation of problem solvers. SWIEET sponsored the Institution of Civil Engineers in South Wales, as part of Tomorrow’s Engineers week to do just that.
Run over 5 consecutive days, in engineering inspired venues such as the Principality Stadium, St Fagan’s Museum and the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, over 50 volunteers from diverse backgrounds engaged with approximately 250-300 school pupils.
The ICE Engineering Team Challenge showcased the need for future engineers by explaining the foreseen issues with climate change, over-population and the benefits of working towards the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the UN. This was a prudent connection to make given the recent passing of the Future Generation Act in Wales. The event challenged the student’s perceptions of engineering and provided information on the potential educational pathways into the profession.
